The new Women’s and Children’s Hospital is being built next to Adelaide Gaol. This means there are some changes to how you can get to the Gaol.

Adelaide Gaol Stays Open

Adelaide Gaol is open as usual. All visits and events, including school trips, will go on as planned.

New Access and Parking

  • Getting There: You can only get to Adelaide Gaol through Bonython Park. Enter Bonython Park from Port Rd and follow the signs.
  • Parking: Free parking is available for cars and coaches onsite at Adelaide Gaol. Use the entry at Port Rd and Phillips St or the Bonython Park Playspace carpark. You can view alternative parking locations here.

Getting to Adelaide Gaol

Bus

Bus services frequently stop at Stop 2 Port Rd, next to Bonython Park, which is a short 5-10 minute walk to Adelaide Gaol. Plan your trip to Adelaide Gaol bus stop.

Tram

Nearby tram stops are located on Port Rd, Thebarton.

Car

Free parking is available for cars and coaches. onsite at Adelaide Gaol. Vehicle entry to Bonython Park is from the intersection of Port Rd and Phillips St or the Bonython Park Playspace carpark entry. Please follow the signs.

** Family - 2 adults and 2 children OR 1 adult and 3 children. Any additional children to be charged at $5.30 (maximum of 5 children).

Facilities

Car parking

There is ample, free parking for cars, bikes and coaches.

For parents

Adelaide Gaol is pram/stroller accessible and there are changing facilities located near the entrance.

Disabled access

The site is fully wheelchair accessible. There are also disabled facilities and we have wheelchairs for hire. Please speak to a member of staff. Guide dogs and companion dogs are also permitted onsite.

Food and drink

The Mugshot Canteen at Adelaide Gaol has a variety of food and drink options, including freshly made coffee, wraps, toasties and hot dogs. View the full menu here.

Retail Shop

Our Retail Shop features a range of souvenirs, including clothing, children’s toys and unique South Australian mementos. A number of books are also stocked which explore South Australia’s history, crimes and the various characters who passed through the Gaol walls.

Picnic tables and seating

Seating is available within the retail area and picnic tables are available outdoors. There is also limited seating within the site.

Toilets

There are toilets next to the retail area, as well as within the site.

Smoking

Due to its heritage listing, Adelaide Gaol is a non-smoking site.
